Olympique de Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi has announced his intention to finish the current season with the club. In a press conference on Thursday, January 19th, the Argentine defender stated his desire to continue playing for Marseille. The following was transcribed by L’Équipe:

“I want to stay here,” said Balerdi, “I have finally found continuity. I thank Ajax for their offer, but Marseille is also a great club. It would be disrespectful to my teammates to leave the club this winter,” Balerdi said. He also mentioned that he is happy with the affection shown by the club supporters.

This season Balerdi has made 19 appearances in a Marseille becoming a key part of Igor Tudor’s side. The Italian had caught the attention of Dutch club AFC Ajax. Following Daley Blind’s departure to Bayern Munich, Ajax was in the market for a defender and had reached out to Balerdi and his representatives to express their interest. According to reports, Balerdi was reportedly “very interested” in Ajax’s interest and the club had prepared an offer in the range of €15m to €20m.
