Wallabies head coach Eddie Jones slammed experienced second-row Rory Arnold while announcing a 33-man squad for a three-day camp later this month on the Gold Coast.
Arnold left Top 14 heavyweights Toulouse at the end of 2022 to join Japanese outfit Hino Red Dolphins on a lucrative contract but has not been playing since March.
This, after Hino Red Dolphins’ season was cancelled last month after a wild night of partying by the club’s players left a nightclub trashed, which forced them to withdraw from the Japan Rugby League One tournament.
Staying put at his club
Instead of looking for a new club, Arnold has opted to stay with the Tokyo-based side and see out the season, something which has not impressed Jones.
“I think he’s working on the factory line at Hino isn’t he?” said Jones.
“I think he’s making those trucks because he’s not playing rugby at the moment. To get selected, you have to be playing rugby.
‘We don’t pick players that make Hino trucks.”
With the start of the Rugby World Cup in France less than six months away, it is important that players are match fit and Jones’ reaction to the 32-Test Wallaby’s inactivity is understandable.
Meanwhile, the 32-year-old’s twin brother, uncapped Richie Arnold, has been called up to Jones’ squad, and the coach was more complimentary of the Toulouse lock, who has been plying his trade at the French club since 2019.
“He’s a massively tough player. Stade Toulouse build their pack around Richie Arnold,” Jones told reporters.
“I went and met with the coach of Toulouse Ugo Mola and what he brings to their team and his development as a player. He’s a young player by playing experience and training so I feel like he’s one of those players that have a lot of development in him, a lot of growth in him.”
Missed out on another second-row
Meanwhile, Jones confirmed that another Toulouse lock, Emmanuel Meafou, will not be playing for Australia after pledging his allegiance to France.
“He’s a good young boy from the western suburbs of Sydney. He’s decided he wants to play for France,” added Jones.
“I had a discussion with him but I only want players that want to play for Australia. If he’s made a decision to play for France, which he has, I wish him all the best and hope he has a great career.
“Do I wish he selected Australia? Not really, because I can’t control that. There’s not much of a story there.”
