BALTIMORE, MD — A deputy police commissioner was robbed at gunpoint with his wife in east Baltimore Friday night, according to multiple reports.

The holdup reportedly occurred in the 2200 block of East Pratt Street at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 19.

A white SUV with four people approached the couple, then two men got out, showed a gun and announced a robbery, WMAR-2 reported.

Deputy Commissioner Danny Murphy and his wife had their cell phones, his wallet and her purse stolen in the robbery, including their Louisiana driver’s licenses, according to Fox 45.

Murphy was hired this spring to be deputy commissioner of the compliance bureau at the Baltimore Police Department. Before that, he had worked as deputy superintendent of the compliance bureau at the New Orleans Police Department. At both agencies, he has been tasked with overseeing the consent decree, a legally binding document with the federal government committing to police reform.

Murphy is one of four deputy police commissioners who report to Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison, who was previously the superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department, an agency he served for more than 20 years.

The robbery of Murphy and his wife came days after Harrison announced a crime reduction plan for the city that includes patrolling specific “micro-zones.” Data show that various four-block micro-zones where the officers are now assigned to conduct foot patrols represent 5 percent of the city but account for 33 percent of its gun violence in the past five years, according to the commissioner.

The location where the deputy commissioner was reportedly held up, within blocks of Patterson Park, did not occur in one of those particular zones.
