As noted, WWE is changing Apollo Crews ring name to simply Apollo, as seen by his updated official profile page in the roster section of WWE.com.
Apollo, who joins Adrian Neville, Antonio Cesaro, Alexander Rusev, Big E. Langston, Luke Harper, Rick Rowan, Elias Samson as recent WWE talents who had their names shortened, reportedly due to a recent tragedy.
The folks at Sportskeeda are reporting that WWE confirmed in an email that the name change was done due to a tragic high school shooting last week in Parkland, Florida.
The gunman of the shooting, 19 year-old Nikolas Cruz, killed 17 students and teachers with an AR-15 rifle in one of the worst tragedies in recent memory. WWE apparently wanted to avoid any confusion with the Cruz name, despite it being spelled differently than Crews. The decision was reportedly made by Vince McMahon himself to drop Crews from Apollo Crews’ name.
