HARTSEL, CO – A woman died and another was seriously injured in a hot air balloon crash in Park County, Colorado Friday morning.
The balloon flight originated in Hartsel and was carrying nine passengers and two pilots had what sheriff’s deputies described as a “hard landing” around 10:30 a.m. east of Hartsel, on High Chaparral Road, in the mountains northwest of Colorado Springs. CBS2 identified the balloon as a Cameron A-250 hot air balloon, operated by Colorado Balloon Rides. A pilot of another balloon that took off at the same time Friday morning said weather was not a problem.
“We could wave to the people in the other basket and take pictures of each other. The kids were blowing soap bubbles.” Tommy Cederlund, a pilot of 47 years, told CBS.
The more seriously injured of two woman was taken by Flight for Life to Penrose Hospital, in colorado Springs, where she died.
Police did not identify the woman.
The incident will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and Park County Coroner’s Office, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
