As L’Équipe reported earlier today, Lyon are targeting Ajax left-back Nicolás Tagliafico (29) as a defensive priority – after the setback of Manchester United’s hijacking of the Tyrell Malacia deal which was on the verge of being completed last week. OL have drawn up a list of three options to replace the Malacia – the priority is said to be Tagliafico. The Argentinian has one-year left on his current contract in Amsterdam, who would want to sell the defender for between €4-5m.

The 29 year-old made 16 appearances last season for Ajax in all competitions, scoring two goals and making two assists. Tagliafico is also a heavily experienced international for Argentina with 40 caps for his national side –  winning the Copa América in 2020/2021.

Lyon are said to be exploring two other options, as they accept it would be difficult to convince the Argentinian to join the Ligue 1 team. Club President Jean-Michel Aulas promised that the club is targeting players that are actually “a level above” Malacia, after sporting director Vincent Ponsot said that “the institution is always stronger than any player. Sometimes there are demands – that’s how it is in the world of football – that can’t be made. It’s true that it can sometimes collapse deals. But we want a left-back, and we’ll find a good left-back.”
