A picture is worth a thousand words, as the old saying goes. Migrant caravan workers attempting to seek asylum in the United States were met with tear gas by border patrol agents. New photos of the chaos show the migrants fleeing from large bouts of smoke. Some images even reveal young children fleeing while covering their eyes at the Chaparral crossing in Tijuana, Mexico.

President Donald Trump has gone on to defend the U.S. use of tear gas on the migrants, saying that it was “a very minor form of the tear gas itself” and assured media outlets that it was “very safe,” reported AP. The mayor of Tijuana has declared the disturbing events to be a “humanitarian crisis” and has asked the United Nations for help dealing with the near 5,000 Central American migrants roaming the border city.

AP reported that by the end of the weekend many of the “migrants appeared sullen, wondering whether the unrest had spoiled whatever possibilities they might have had for making asylum cases,” in the U.S. Not to mention, the group was met by harsh protests from many people in Mexico upon arrival the week before. Check back here for photo updates as the situation unfolds throughout the rest of the week.
