RMC Sport have spoken to a number of PSG insiders, who have made their disappointment in 33-year-old Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani’s decision not to sign a 2-month extension with the club so that he can compete in the final matches in the 2019/20 Champions’ League with them, abundantly clear.

As a result of Cavani’s decision, he will leave the club at the end of the month, never to play for them again – the club decided not to call him back for pre-season today because of this reality.

The player’s entourage had the following to say on the outlet on his decision: “He did not want to take a risk and hurt a departure to his new club.” The individual went on to cite concerns about Edi getting a knock in his final matches with PSG which could have compromised an August move to a new club, with whom he would not have been able to have a full pre-season with.

A club employee had the following to say on the matter: “President Al-Khelaïfi has always supported him. He has always been behind him. He had an offer to continue for two months on the same salary that he is on now and the possibility to win the Champions’ League, and yet he preferred to leave. It is small of him.”

Certain team-mates also can’t understand his decision – the majority of the squad preferred to hail the loyalty shown by captain Thiago Silva who was in the same situation as Cavani, but still decided to remain for another 2 months regardless.

Another member of staff added:

“He could have left just after… He is going to sign for a club on a free. There is no danger for him and the argument about not getting injured is nonsense – it is simply a question of principle. Edi would have liked a full contract extension offer (past the 2-month mark) and it never came.”

PSG were in fact optimistic, just days ago, about the possibility of getting him to remain for a further 2 months, having even told Choupo-Moting he would be leaving because Cavani was going to remain – the Uruguayan in the end made a dramatic u-turn.

This decision has infuriated Thomas Tuchel, who viewed Cavani as an important element of his attacking stable, having started him in the last Champions’ League match for PSG, the 2nd leg vs Borussia Dortmund.
