NXT Cruiserweight Champion Kushida has revealed that COVID-19 was the reason why his scheduled title defense against Roderick Strong couldn’t take place last month.
In an Instagram video today, Kushida stated that he tested positive for COVID-19 three weeks ago. Kushida was supposed to defend his NXT Cruiserweight Championship against Strong on the August 17 episode of NXT.
Kushida said he and his wife tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated, but he and his family are feeling better now.
“Three weeks ago, I was not available for my title match on NXT TV. I tested positive for COVID-19. My family also tested positive. Thankfully, everyone is okay,” Kushida said.
“My wife and I are fully vaccinated, but we still got the virus. Fortunately, the vaccine has given us some immunity, but we experienced some symptoms. We had very low energy and I lost my sense of smell and taste. We are recovering — everyone is feeling better now. The pandemic isn’t over. Please stay safe. I will see you in the ring soon. Thank you for your time.”
Strong’s manager Malcolm Bivens has been calling Strong the uncrowned NXT Cruiserweight Champion since that title match against Kushida had to be postponed.
